EXCERPT:
“How’s what’s-his-name?” Josh tugged her close. She hoped his acceptance of the body slam wasn’t for show. Nikki leaned into his caress and pressed against him.
“I don’t know. You’ll have to ask his new wife,” she answered.
His hands skimmed lower, more personal. Her breath caught.
“So, you’re single?” Two fingers moved and lifted her chin. He wore an expression filled with curiosity. An instant later, his eyes narrowed and his mouth formed into a thin line. “And in a place like this.”
“Yes, and in a place like this. Could we go somewhere private and talk?” she asked. His roving hands made her skin sizzle; the sudden heaviness of her breasts urged her to foolishly rub against him. Panic settled deep in her stomach. She held her upper body away and rubbed the leather strap of her purse, finding comfort in the repeated movement.
Nikki had hoped for insider information about the drug dealer, but meeting Josh in the Lifestyles Choice Club was a welcome surprise. The coincidence convinced her that she was destined to help save the women before more perished from the tainted pills.
She focused on his face. Faint lines fanned the corners of Josh’s perfect lips and eyes―eyes that were the color of the irises blooming on her patio. The brilliant blue contrasted with the black of his soft hair. She had planned to search for Josh in Cyan to ask for help, but hadn’t expected to see him here. Even more surprising was the instant lust assaulting her.
Josh glanced at the door. “Let’s go outside.”
“I’ll go with you anywhere.” Her assertiveness shocked her. She licked her lips and lowered her glance.
“Good, I’ll meet you at the exit in a few minutes.” Josh nudged her forward.
She stopped at the other side of the dance floor and glanced back. Josh talked to a tall man wearing a fuchsia shirt and sipping an umbrella drink.
He nodded in her direction and the man took a step toward her. Josh grabbed his arm, and they turned their backs to her. The man had to be Josh’s partner. Nikki wanted a closer look and moved toward them as Josh turned. He waved a finger in the air, pointing her toward the exit. With a huff, Nikki pivoted and made her way through the throng of plushies to the entrance. Ready to leave the smoky interior, she felt an arm weave through hers.
“Nikki.” Josh held the club’s heavy double doors.
She inhaled his spicy cologne as he whispered into her ear and then led the way into the crisp fall air, strong perfume and the pungent scent of alcohol remaining behind. Nikki gazed into the sky. Dusk had turned into an inky moonless night. No stars would cast their lights on the merrymakers exiting the club. Her hands trembled as she held her purse, heavy with a gun inside, close to her side. Could he see her nervousness? Would he inquire if she participated in the activities of the club? Question her integrity and morality? God, she hoped not.
“Where’s your car?”
“Over there.” She nodded to a Mercedes a few feet away.
Josh grabbed her arm and twirled her into a snug embrace. He lowered his head, molded his firm lips to hers. His tongue traced the seam of her mouth, demanding entrance and she wanted to allow it. Greedy for a taste of him, she opened, vaguely wondering why they’d never kissed in college. She tasted beer and savored his lips as they devoured hers.
She moaned, enjoying her fantasy coming to life after all of the countless sleepless nights over the last couple of months. The persistent erotic visions of her and Josh skin to skin, limbs entangled in the throes of passion had catapulted her to this point in time. Her sexual cravings had nothing on the reality of being in his arms at last.
He broke the kiss and smiled at her. “I’ll meet you at…a coffee shop, in a few minutes. Will you meet me, Nikki Yadon?”
Her heart went ping. She lowered her spiked heel to the ground, her foot having lifted like that of a woman passionately being kissed in an old fifties movie. She struggled to get control of her desire, wanting nothing more than to go into one of the rooms upstairs and continue the heat and angst of foreplay.
Nikki blinked. Oh my. A cool breeze caressed her heated skin, and her gaze fastened on Josh’s expectant expression. If the tingles and throbbing were a prelude, she anticipated he’d be an exceptional lover. His body remained in tight muscular form, his lips were perfect, and he had strong lean fingers which she couldn’t wait to have stroking her body. She shook her head, trying to clear her unruly erotic thoughts.
“Yes, I’ll go to the coffee shop. Josh, I have to tell you about a drug dealer who’s selling tainted ecstasy around Cyan.” Her voice sounded shaky. She reached to twist the ring on her finger, but the band was gone, as was her past life.
